The opening of season 2 also teases the introduction of Spectres, terrifying beings that anyone who has read the book trilogy will know are to be greatly feared.

Cue some amusing back-and-forth as they get to grips with each other’s existence: he is freaked out that Lyra has a talking daemon; she has no idea what an omelette is.

But the episode reaches its peak when scene-stealer Ruth Wilson arrives on screen as the devilishly conniving Mrs Coulter. The creation of Cittàgazze – an old-fashioned built set, rather than a CGI imagining – is impressive. Back in the other world, unpleasant scenes of torture are being perpetrated by the malevolent Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson). This review contains spoilers for His Dark Materials Season 1, which just aired its finale on HBO and the BBC.

For avid Pullman fans, the series might be a treat. We can all agree that Mrs Coulter is innately corrupt, a woman who will stop at nothing to get what she wants, particularly when it comes to tracking down her daughter Lyra. Season 2 of His Dark Materials, the television adaptation of Philip Pullman’s book trilogy of the same name, picks up right where we left off, following Lyra as she sets off on her journey for answers with only her shape-shifting daemon Pantalaimon (voiced by Kit Connor) for company. Once Asriel returns for one of his intermittent visits, Lyra learns of a recent discovery he has made in the frozen North: the existence of parallel worlds, which is tied to a mysterious substance called Dust. It is quite possible, for example, to watch a series of Line of Duty without having watched any of the others, and to understand perfectly what is going on. This world is ruled by the Magisterium, a theocratic government that suppresses free thought everywhere save for scholastic institutions, and even then, with strict guidelines forbidding outright heresy. If any part of the opening hour distracts, it's the storyline involving the water-faring Gyptian community and the losses they're incurring at the hands of a shadowy gang of kidnappers called the Gobblers.

Got that? Some drama serials are welcoming to new viewers.

That feeling of being trapped at Jordan College leads Lyra right into the arms of Ruth Wilson’s Mrs. Coulter, a mysterious scholar who’s a little too eager to take the girl on as her ward. The pilot throws a lot of mythology and world-building at viewers up front, so if you’re not familiar with the source material, this approach might make your head spin, but stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with a rich world that grows far wider and deeper as the story progresses. The BBC and HBO's take on His Dark Materials has an impressive debut with unabashed reverence for the source material. It is aimed squarely at those who are familiar with the story from Philip Pullman’s bestselling books, and who remember well the details of series one.

Despite Asriel’s groundbreaking discovery, it's Lyra's journey, but frustratingly, her perception of these conflicts is limited by virtue of the fact that Asriel refuses to tell her the truth about his mission.

The arrival of His Dark Materials season 2 couldn’t have come at a better time, offering viewers a very welcome dose of distraction, fantasy and escapism as we face an uncertain reality. With a menacing glint in her eye, Ruta is just as powerful as she is entrancing to watch, the sequence that she features in providing one of the highlights of the episode. These scenes provide some of the best assurance in the pilot that the showrunners are tackling the more mature aspects of His Dark Materials with resolve.

Reviews His Dark Materials Season 2 Episode 1 Review (Spoiler-Free) Lyra crosses to a new world while Mrs Coulter terrifies in the old one.

Please review our, You need to be a subscriber to join the conversation. She teams up with Will (Amir Wilson), a boy from modern-day Oxford who has also found himself there. His Dark Materials' first episode sets the stage wonderfully for what's to follow. The Gyptians and Gobblers have an important part to play, and this point in the story is really the only place to introduce them, but the awesome scope and implications of Asriel's discovery still pull focus from what's going on down on the riverfront, and those scenes feel unavoidably shoehorned in. It's clear that she's a force to be reckoned with, her sweet demeanor unquestionably hiding darker motives.

Asriel's discovery directly contradicts Magisterium doctrine, and agents of the organization are already moving to silence him. More than that, this discovery provokes an attack on Asriel by one of his own allies, quickly establishing that trust is in short supply in this world. So if you are a newcomer looking for lockdown solace in an autumn drama, give this one a miss. That’s reassuring this early on, as Lyra’s journey in the novel eventually sees her face moral quandaries with world-altering ramifications.

If the opening episode of season 2 is anything to go by, Ruth will prove herself yet again as one of the standout stars of the show.

Despite coming from different worlds, one with witches and the other with iPhones, the pair are clearly cut from the same cloth, both inherently believing in the importance of goodness and morality. BBC taking allegations about Diana Panorama interview ‘very seriously’, boss says, The Trials of Oscar Pistorius viewers ‘disgusted’ with documentary.

Having witnessed her friend Roger (Lewin Lloyd) die at the hands of her father Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) – a man she thought she could trust wholeheartedly – Lyra decides to step into the unknown, entering the doorway of a new world. Honestly, the decision to cast The Affair star in this role was truly one of the best TV casting choices of recent years. Season 1 provided just a taste of the cruelty Mrs Coulter is able and willing to inflict on others, all the while emphasising her capacity to love when faced with Lyra and her former lover (and co-parent) Lord Asriel. Dafne Keen acquits herself well as Lyra and it's easy to see how the feral energy she brought to Laura in Logan will assist her going forward, only now with the benefit of more dialogue to compliment her physicality. Didn’t see the last series?

The problem for the rest of us is that it lacks both the novelty of series one and the exciting narrative – it now feels very dense, which works well in a novel but less so in a TV series. His Dark Materials episode 1 review: full-strength Pullman BBC One’s new fantasy epic is rich, complex, does justice to the world of the books, and is worth missing bedtime for. Lyra is restless and thirsts for adventure in the world outside Jordan’s oppressive walls, but usually has to settle for chasing her friend Roger across the rooftops of the college, since her uncle is, to put it mildly, distant both physically and emotionally. The same attention to detail goes for the feature film-quality production design. Warning: spoilers ahead for season 1 of His Dark Materials.

The Crown, series four review: Diana's arrival turns the drama against the royals. But her scenes are absolutely riveting to watch, Ruth savouring every manipulative word uttered by Mrs Coulter as though she’s drinking a glass of delicious red wine. It's small touches like this that really sell the Dæmons as an integral and intriguing part of this world rather than a gimmick. New Line's 2007 adaptation of the first book in Phillip Pullman's young adult series (The Golden Compass) boasted an impressive cast and the budget necessary to bring the world to life, but they squandered those riches on a story that didn't dare address the book's more free-thinking themes.

At the end of season 1 of His Dark Materials, protagonist Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) finds herself in a fragile, uncertain position. The epic fantasy series takes us into new worlds, but fails to capture the imagination. Dafne and Amir both do a masterful job at portraying young characters who are just as wide-eyed as they are wise beyond their years, bouncing off one another as they explore the curious city of Cittàgazze together.

The BBC and HBO clearly spared no expense realizing Lyra's world. Lyra (Dafne Keene, looking somehow much older than last time even though the two series were filmed back-to-back) is now in a different world, in the strange city of Cittàgazze.
