Margaret Rose Preston (1875-1963), painter and printmaker, was born in Adelaide on 29 April 1875, the elder of two daughters of Prudence (born Lyle, Eleanor Stewart Towzey (1858-1931), singer and actress, was born on 22 November 1858 in Wolloomooloo, Sydney, daughter of Theodosia Stewart, actres, Carola Cohn (1892-1964), sculptor, was born on 25 April 1892 at Bendigo, Victoria, one of five children of Sarah Helen (born Snowball) and Julius C, Rosa Catherine Fiveash (1854-1938), botanical artist, was born on 22 July 1854 in Adelaide, youngest child of Margaret (born Rees) and Robert Archi. Grace Cossington Smith b. Cossington Smith absorbed the modernist ideas quickly and in 1915 exhibited 'The Sock Knitter' ('the first fully post-impressionist work to be exhibited in Australia'). The Art Gallery of New South Wales organised a retrospective exhibition in 1973.
In 1910 Cossington Smith started drawing lessons with Anthony Dattilo Rubbo. On a two-year trip to England with her sister in 1912, she attended drawing classes at Winchester School of Art and in Stettin, Germany. With the help of overseas magazines and books, and reproductions brought from England by a former pupil, Norah Simpson, Rubbo encouraged enthusiasm for modern art. Grace was a boarder at Miss Connolly's school, Point Piper, and later attended Abbotsleigh, Wahroonga, where she was taught art by Albert Collins and Alfred Coffey and was encouraged by headmistress Marian Clarke, a talented water colourist. She was surrounded by women in her family from birth, and this in part fostered a confidence to carry out what she enjoyed.

She described her work as 'expressing form in colour, colour vibrant with light - but containing this other, silent quality which is unconscious, and belongs to all things created'.
A student of Dattilo Rubbo, Cossington Smith was quick to absorb modernist ideas and in 1915 exhibited 'The Sock Knitter', described by Daniel Thomas as 'perhaps the first fully Post-Impressionist work painted in Australia'.
She was involved with the Turramurra Wall Painters and helped in the painting of murals at the Turramurra Grammar School (now demolished), and the Children's Chapel, St James Church, Sydney. Kathleen Gorham (1932-1983), dancer, was born of English-Irish parentage in Sydney. Grace attended Abbotsleigh School for Girls in Wahroonga 1905–09 where Albert Collins and Alfred Coffey took art classes.
In 1914 she rejoined her family in a newly acquired home in Turramurra, built by a previous owner to accommodate Quaker religious meetings and renamed 'Cossington' by its new owner.
She exhibited in many group exhibitions in Sydney and overseas and was awarded many prizes, the OBE and AO.
She grew up as the second child of well-off English immigrants, and they were able to afford her education at Abbotsleigh. It was her home for 65 years and the subject of the interior paintings which dominate her later work.
The family moved to Thornleigh, New South Wales around 1890.
She had a private income but she taught art for several years at two small private schools and to private pupils. She also painted landscapes and streetscapes, on excursions with artist friends or family, and native flowers. She died on 24 December 1984.
She returned to Dattilo Rubbo's classes.

Her early sketch books comprise realistic pencil drawings of familiar household articles.
