The Merchant Navy is made up of a large number of shipping companies operating many different types and size of ship, from container ships, to chemical carriers, to oil rig supply vessels. More than a quarter of the world's oil and gas supply is produced offshore, and more than a third of the UK's energy comes from renewable sources. Many industries are directly or indirectly connected to maritime transport.

The cruise industry continues to grow with nearly 400 ships in operation, carrying 30 million passengers around the globe. Around 50,000 merchant ships, registered in over 150 nations and manned by over a million seafarers of nearly every nationality, transport every kind of cargo internationally.

The merchant navy, offshore oil sector, commercial fishery and cruise companies are part of the industry of the future, and the maritime sector is already a key catalyst for socio-economic development and international competitiveness in a changing world, with new companies and organizations emerging and establishing operations in Europe, Asia and North America. Both industries provide opportunities for seafarers to work on the vessels supporting the installations. And a myriad of recreational ships (with approximately 45,000 privately-owned ships operating out of the United States in December 2010), including several hundred large and mega cruise ships, offer the most diversified leisure and tourism services to an expanding market.

While most are not focused specifically on maritime industries, the exposures are similar across multiple worksites. The cruise industry is a highly profitable international activity, and the fastest growing sector of the travel, tourism and leisure industry.
