The grand organ is a fine five-manual Harrison & Harrison instrument, installed for the coronation of King George VI in 1937. By the early 1980’s the Grand Organ at Westminster Cathedral was in a state of severe deterioration. In particular, it was Dupré who insisted that the instrument should be at the west end as is common on the continent, rather than where Bentley, the Cathedral Architect, had intended it to be, in a position more typical of the English Cathedrals. Largely for financial reasons, only the Choir Organ in the Apse was ever built.

In the early 1960s, Nicolas Kynaston restored the tradition of recitals after a lapse of some years, inviting many famous names to play, among them Germani, Ralph Downes, Jean Langlais, George Thalben-Ball, Pierre Cochereau and Jean Guillou. We hope that the recitalists booked for this year will be able to play at Westminster Cathedral as soon as it becomes possible. Improvements in the mechanical layout were made, and these included conversion of the pneumatic actions to an electro-pneumatic system.
