The Carlsbad Caverns National Park is home to a set of jaw-dropping cave systems that are well worth the long drive across the entire width of Texas from Houston. . Natty Flat Smokehouse in Lipan. The two most popular activities in the National Forest are hiking and camping. With only one lane on each side most of the way, it’s a quaint retreat—a throwback to Sunday drives where the journey was the destination. Swimmers come to the Blue Lagoon from spring to fall and the waters are popular with scuba divers due to the visibility and depth of the pools.
So many new things for me to do in Texas, thank you!! Since we were already out that way, SVV and I decided against going back to Fredericksburg for happy hour and instead, drove a bit further past the Texas Rangers Heritage Center out to the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park area for some sunset shots.
You have more than 150 retail stops downtown, and not just full of tourist crap either; legit boutiques and T-shirt print shops and other five-and-dime stores that were beguiling to the uninitiated. The only thing that bummed me out about this trip is that we didn’t leave anytime to explore San Antonio, a city I’ve long been wanting to visit. You can stay over at one of about 100 campsites in the area. You can park up on the left as soon as you enter the park or keep going and find a parking location close to Elm Lake instead. Erosion exposed it, allowing water and wind to sculpt shelves, overhangs, niches, and crevices—all ideal for bouldering—as well as bowl-like depressions called huecos (“hollows” in Spanish). When to visit: Amazing whenever you go.
It functions as a restart button; a cruise control for the mind. I had no idea what to expect out of a town this small, but what I wasn’t prepared to find was a jam-packed square brimming with shops and restaurants, cars filling its every parking space. I think prior to the trip starting, I was most excited about our day in Wimberley as it began with a hike around Jacob’s Well (which is deserving of its own post, so stay tuned!). Love this! Cadillac Ranch will only take up a small portion of your time but it’s well worth it. The cramped old store, with floor-to-ceiling shelves in tight rows, takes up half a block with more than 150,000 volumes of literature, poetry, and plays. Cruising south on State Highway 79, the bibliophile in me wants to make a stop in Archer City. On one corner by the convention center, the Micro Market features a collection of shops offering everything from clothes and accessories to elaborately decorated doughnuts from SisterDough. From the Alamo, it’s a 91-mile cruise southeast on US 181 through farmland to the Presidio La Bahía in Goliad.
With Huntsville and the Blue Lagoon only a few miles further north (see #6 above), you can combine these into a weekend if you want to get out of Houston for longer. The nice thing is that most of these towns we visited are within 90 minutes of Austin!

From the town square, I follow 30 miles of twisting, climbing road that clings to the rocky shoreline of Lake Buchanan. If you have time and energy, you can tackle the six- to eight-hour round-trip hike to the summit of Guadalupe Peak. Getting to the falls is an easy 10-minute walk and as they originate from a spring, water comes down all year round.

Sitting on the trading route between Dallas and Jackson that has today become the I-20, the town grew in stature and is sometimes known as the Gateway of Texas. Everyone in Palacios ends up at The Point.” Road-trippers can dine on world-class pho and spring rolls at the same table where the late chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain once sat, or grab takeout for a picnic on the docks overlooking the bay. You can tour the second most visited wine country in the U.S. or drive through Marble Falls. Dallas has a lot to offer and together with the other locations in the Met area, you will have more than enough for a weekend and plenty if you stay a whole week!
Huntsville is best known as the place General Sam Houston, dubbed the most famous Texan ever, spent the majority of his life. Its constant 68-degree water makes it the best place in the city to cool down during the long summer season.
After driving 90 miles, the best view in Texas awaits in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. I’m planning a road trip to Texas in September.
I really like the map. It’s a trip unlike any others you’ll take in the US, I guarantee you =). With nearly 100 RV Parks and campgrounds, there is room for everyone.
When we arrived, we made straight for Akaushi Yoakum burgers and lunch at Huisache Grill.
The finishing touch for the whole excursion is a slice of coconut meringue pie at Marble Falls’ Blue Bonnet Café, a home-cooking go-to since 1929. Also, it’s kind of adorable that they have “honor coolers” of beer on the front porch for those waiting for a seat at this cozy joint. In the evening, we went back to 11th Street Cowboy Bar for a second time, and I can’t begin to tell you how much I adore this place for its authenticity. Dallas may get all the attention, but the neighboring town of Fort Worth has just as much to offer, if not more. put you off. From Rockport, it’s only 28 miles to Portland, where it’s time to say goodbye to this laid-back coastal road as it merges south into the bigger US 181.
If you can finish it within the time limit you get eat for free, and it’s been said only true cowboys can handle the challenge. It’s just impossible to drive 31 without succumbing to the temptation to stop every 30 minutes. My destination is Canyon of the Eagles Resort, where I board a cruise, reveling in views of waterfalls and wildlife living on the Colorado River’s craggy cliffs. Think amazing southern food, proper local blues bars and amazing sights of the mighty river and stunning plantations - all for you to visit along the way. As I head another 30 miles west from Midland to the far side of Odessa, the stark landscape hints that things are about to get a bit weird.
I’m embarrassed to say that prior to our ultimate Texas road trip two weeks ago, my travels to and around the Lone Star State were largely centered on long weekends in Austin. Don't get close as they can be pretty fast, but it's well worth seeing the giant creatures from a distance. I loved following your adventures through one of my absolute favorite parts of the country. I should get out there someday and do some Texas style wine tasting! I seriously caught the Texas bug on this trip.
With a lot less tourists than Galveston, Texas City boasts the longest man-made pier in the world with a 5-mile Dike Levee stretching out into the bay. Published monthly by the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Highways, the official travel magazine of Texas, encourages travel to and within the Lone Star State and tells the Texas story to readers around the world. I got it recently from Boden. Then, it was back to Bandera Bunkhouse on Main for a night of much-needed sleep. Distance from Houston: 250 miles (4 hours 20 minutes), When to visit: November and April offer perfect weather and few crowds. Distance from Houston: 60 miles (1 hour 10 minutes). On this route, you won’t see much of anything that looks like civilization again until you reach Van Horn, 140 miles away. I’d love to recreate your itinerary someday. This one is definitely long overdue since Texas is so full of beauty.
Not today, Brenham, but we’ll be back with a trailer (we’ve already got the Chevy truck!) But don’t splish-splash in Georgetown too long. The Texas City Museum is an interesting stop - it's full of snippets from local history, exhibits taken off the USS Westfield and the amazing collection of model train sets.
Pass the time on your next tripwith this word search! I guess it earned its slogan for a reason…. This century-old pool is sourced with pure mineral water that steadily flows from a local spring, staying a cool 69 degrees. Rooms start at $189 a night. Any of these combinations would make for an awesome couples’ weekend getaway in Texas: You could spend a week antiquing in Round Top while staying in nearby Brenham (bring a truck or fat budget for shipping things home); you could fly into Austin, then make your base in New Braunfels to do both Gruene Hall and Jacob’s Well; you can easily take a whole weekend in Fredericksburg as you wine-taste in Hill Country; or you could do the cowboy thang with a couple days in Bandera.
