Most difficult of the unmaintained South Rim river trails, the Tomichi Route is extremely steep, exposed for the whole length, and traverses a surface largely made up of loose rocks, while descending an east-west gully.

Warner Point Nature Trail offers a great taste of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison at the end of South Rim Road. Look south to the San Juan Mountain Range, Uncompahgre Valley, and Bostwick Park. The longest trail in the national park explores the western section of the North Rim, starting at the ranger station near the end of the park road and climbing, gently at first then more steeply, via several long switchbacks, up to the summit of 8,563 foot Green Mountain. The views are very extensive, both north to the canyon and south towards Montrose, and the path passes a good variety of vegetation. Unfortunately I haven’t found any good free trail maps for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (just the free one below). It goes without saying: you’ll want actual topo maps for those hikes! These bands of lighter colored igneous rock - called pegmatite dikes - are more resistant to erosion than the dark gneisses (sounds like "nice-es") into which they intrude. The route begins near Kneeling Camel View on the North Rim. The Oak Flats Trail, which conveniently begins at the visitor center, leads roughly a quarter mile to the start of the Gunnison Route proper, marked by a sign reading ‘River Access, Permit Required’.
